Kurt Weill in Hollywood gathers together all of Weill’s original music for Hollywood films performed live in concert for the first time. Excerpts from each film as well as photos are featured on screen so audiences can see images and scenes from the films while hearing performances of the songs.

Included are several world premieres: songs composed but not included in the final film edit or published.

Eager to compose for film during his early career in Germany, Kurt Weill got the opportunity only after his exile to the United States in 1935. Though he worked in Hollywood from 1937, Weill’s brilliant songs and music for movies are little known and incredibly, some songs have never been performed before in public - composed by Weill but cut from the final film release and never published - so the concert includes several world premieres.

Weill composed for the Hillywood film studios, including Paramount and 20th Century Fox where his collaborators included the directors Fritz Lang (also recently arrived in exile) and Jean Renoir, lyricist Ira Gershwin and renowned, left-wing playwright Clifford Odets. Many of the most popular movie stars of the era feature in the films: George Raft, Sylvia Sidney, Fred MacMurray and one of the most captivating of all screen beauties, Ava Gardner.

The films contain an exciting array of film styles and stories: cool film noir, satirical comedy in flamboyant Technicolor, a love story in the Spanish Civil War, exquisite chiaroscuro cinematography where the goddess of love comes alive, the liberation of France in WWII.

Das Programm Kurt Weill in Hollywood bringt erstmals Kurt Weills sämtliche, für Hollywood geschriebene Songs und Originalmusikstücke als Live-Konzert auf die Bühne. Zu jedem Song gibt es Ausschnitte aus dem jeweiligen Film: Bilder, Szenen und Dialoge in ihrer Dramatik oder Komik wirken also zusammen mit Weills Musik und unterstreichen und begleiten diese.

Einige Songs und Musikstücke wurden noch nie öffentlich aufgeführt – sie wurden von Weill komponiert, aber aus der endgültigen Filmversion herausgeschnitten und nie veröffentlicht.

Kurt Weill interessierte sich bereits in seiner frühen Karriere für das Komponieren von Filmmusik, aber erst im Exil in den U.S.A., wo er ab 1937 in Hollywood arbeitete, ergab sich dazu Gelegenheit. Weills brillante Songs und Filmmusiken sind jedoch kaum bekannt, und - kaum zu glauben - wurden einige Songs noch nie öffentlich aufgeführt.

Weill arbeitete für kurze Zeitspannen in Los Angeles und komponierte für Filmstudios wie Paramount und 20th Century Fox. Zu seinen Mitarbeitern gehörten die Regisseure Fritz Lang (ebenfalls ins Exil) und Jean Renoir, der Texter Ira Gershwin und der renommierte linke Dramatiker Clifford Odets. In den so entstandenen Filmen sind viele der beliebtesten Filmstars der damaligen Zeit zu sehen: George Raft, Sylvia Sidney, Fred MacMurray und eine der faszinierendsten Schönheiten der Leinwand, Ava Gardner.

Vielfalt visueller Stile aus: cooler Film Noir in You and Me, extravagantes Technicolor in Where Do We Go from Here?, exquisite Chiaroscuro-Kameraführung in One Touch of Venus oder dokumentarischer Realismus in dem Propagandafilm der US-Regierung A Salute to France.

- Katherine Manley, soprano and Michael Todd Simpson, baritone, have sung lead roles in musicals and opera in theatres and concert halls in the U.S., U.K., France and Germany. - They are accompanied by conductor and pianist Philip Headlam who has performed much of Weill’s music, including at the Kurt Weill Fest, Dessau, as well as with orchestras, in opera houses, on radio broadcasts and CD recordings in the U.K., Germany, Belgium, Italy, Austria and Canada. - Video and film design is by Barbara Weigel whose innovative work has been seen in theatres, opera houses and exhibitions across Germany and Italy as well as in short documentaries, music videos and animated film.

Weill’s music for films in the ‘Golden Age of Hollywood’ has remained unfamiliar and unknown -- but it is ripe for rediscovery: expressive and movingly dramatic songs as well as witty, satirical songs and brilliant dance sequences, all in Weill’s unique and dynamic style.

Many songs recall his best work with Brecht in Berlin while others capture the exciting spirit and energy of Weill’s new opportunities and collaborations in America.

Weills Musik für die in Hollywoods ‘Golden Age’ entstandenen Filme ist bis heute wenig bekannt – aber sie ist reif für eine Wiederentdeckung: es sind ausdrucksstarke und bewegend dramatische sowie witzige, satirische Songs und brillante Tanzsequenzen, allesamt in Weills einzigartigem und dynamischem Stil. Viele der Songs erinnern an seine besten Arbeiten mit Brecht in Berlin, während andere den aufregenden Geist und die Energie von Weills neuen Möglichkeiten und Kooperationen in Amerika einfangen.
